The QUICK PICK list
- "A Year
in Karen's Kitchen" Cookbook - Inspired by and mostly from
"Menu of the Month" postings, it's great reading for beginning
Zoners and old hands alike. Filled with recipes, tables, lists and
advice, you will enjoy reading this even if you don't try the recipes!
The Poster--Foods listed in Block Servings in easy to follow 11x19
poster for the front of your refrigerator--easy to view, makes meal
planning a CINCH! View it here.
The Software--I reccomend MasterCook! If you can't find it locally,
I do a special run to the store to buy it for you.
Scoops --What? and WHY? Scoops (or "dishers") are used in the
food service industry for dishing up portions of foods. Their measurements
are based on number of scoops per gallon, so the basis for measurement
is...weird. BUT, if you are really careful, you can actually find
4 scoops which fairly accurately approximate the traditional measurements
of 1 tablespoons, 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup and 1/2 cup. It makes measuring
SO MUCH EASIER, because they have a little ambidextrous handle which,
when depressed, scoops the food into your mixing bowl or onto
your plate. These are especially useful when you are making cookies
or dishing up lots of portions. Not essential, but incredibly handy!

Books, Software
and Poster
"A Year
in Karen's Kitchen" Cookbook
- I didn't
mean to write this cookbook, but it was destined to be one, I
guess! I thought I could simply PRINT the archived "Menu of the
Month" for each month of the first year and sell them individually.
WRONG! After finding that my HTML editor doesn't print to my printer,
then copying and pasting and finding out that all the editing
codes don't transfer but show up as forced carriage returns, THEN
making those corrections and seeing other editing mistakes that
had gotton by in the first posting, PLUS seeing where I could
add some new recipes INCLUDING the elusive Pumpkin Pudding Bread
Recipe that never made it to October or November...well, I couldn't
resist converting many of the recipe to tables for ease of reading
and use. Like many of the simple projects I attempt, it got all
out of hand and ended up being my first cookbook and the First
Anniversary Edition Collection of recipes!
- Even if you
have been downloading the "Menu of the Month" since it's first
day on the Net, this is a worthwhile purchase. I have added more
recipes to it and the tables are really dynamite! The Table of
Contents and Index makes it really easy to use.
- "A
Year in Karen's Kitchen" $19.95
The Poster
- Can't remember
how much pasta is a carbo block? HOW MANY PEANUTS??? A what
size portion of which meat???
-
- Okay, using
my superior powers of graphics and a fabulous color printer, I
have put together a CHART, a POSTER,
which has the most commonly eaten foods all set out in single
block servings, all in neat and tidy BLOCKS, catagorized by carbs,
proteins and fats, then the Best, Fair and Poor choices in each
catagory. It is 11"x19", beautifully colored and laminated,
ready for hanging on your wall or refrigerator. The back side
explains in detail about gramming vs. macronutrients, shows you
visually what a block of food is, has a one day menu plan for
an 11 block day (and room to add more blocks of food for larger
eaters) and has 17 really great, quick and basic recipes, including:
The BIG Salad, Fresh Salsa, Colossal Cookies and Cream Cheese
Delight, the protein source everyone has been raving over.
- Cost:
$8
Consulting
- If you
are from out of town, I would be happy to do a consultation
up to one hour, over the phone, for $30. I will compute your
lean body mass, your protein needs and help you plan your day
and make some menu suggestions. It is almost as good as being
here in San Diego! Call (619)697-7269 or e-mail me at karen@karenskitchen.com
, or go through the guestbook, and we will set up an appointment.
Mail me a check for $30 or I will take your credit card at the
time of the consultation. Have your measurements done (waist,
hips for women/wrist for men, weight, height) and it will go
much faster. If you have a fax number I will even send you day
planning charts so we can do some menus together! Remember I
am in California, so if you are calling from the east coast
, you are 3 hours ahead of me. You may call 8:00a.m. until 5:00
p.m. PST. Special arrangments can be made for evening consults.

Sponges
- Alphonso
gets into his boat each morning and goes out to the new area he
has chosen to harvest from that day. The Bahama sun is clear and
bright, the sea is the color of 50's turquoise tile and you can
see the bottom of the sea from the edge of the boat. He puts on
his snorkel and fins, rolls back over the side and falls into
the warm water. With his knife he deftly cuts his harvest of sponges,
careful to only choose those that are round and firm, and harvested
in such a way that the mother sponge will continue to grow. He
puts them into his net bag and heads back to land. Once he arrives
he takes his fresh sponges to his shed where he begins the multi-cleaning
process by which his beautiful sponges are so well known on the
islands. He is meticulous, he is thorough, and when he is done
he offers his customer a natural sea sponge of the finest quality
available.
- My brother
in law Ossie is from the islands, and has brought Alphonso's sponges
to the states to sell. Now available for the first time, you may
purchase these fine sponges in either the 5" or 8" diameter (both
approximate). I use the big one in my tub and shower to bathe
with, I use the small one in my kitchen, and occassionally to
do a sponge painting project with. They are durable, they are
a joy to use and own. I like to think about how much longer mine
is going to last now that there are 35 pounds less of me to wash
than there were 6 months ago!
- 5" sponge
(includes shipping).............................................................................
$8
- 8" sponge
(includes shipping)..............................................................................$12
