"Before the Open Window"

Books and Recordings to Empower and Affirm One's Faith and Life Choices

I opened Karen's Kitchen believing that God wanted me to teach people to be physically healthy. My faith was young, so I did not feel comfortable sharing the gospel with anyone, but I have ALWAYS been able to share my opinions about food and health! So I told Him that if He would help me, I would put my efforts into bringing Him physically healthy people, then HE could convert them. What I didn't know was that God had plans for converting ME as well!

10 years later, I have found myself praying before the open window.

If you are not familiar with the prophet Daniel in the Bible, the story goes like this: Every day, three times a day, Daniel would kneel in front of his open window and pray to God. Everyone knew this, for Daniel was the Prime Minister of Babylon and his habits were well known to all people.

One day some of the under-ministers who were jealous of Daniel went to King Darius, who was also was considered a "god" as they did kings in those days. Flattering him, they said they had drafted a law that for the next 30 days, anyone who prayed to any god other than King Darius, would be thrown into a den of hungry lions. Egotist that Darius was, he signed the law, which made it unchangeable even by him.

Daniel knew the law, but not being one to worship any god but the God of Heaven, Daniel determined that this was not the time to go into hiding with his prayers. And so the next time it was time to pray, Daniel was found in prayer in front of his open window, was arrested, and thrown to the den of lions.

In my own life, I have shut the windows on more than one occassion, and even not bothered to pray at all. But as one learns the power of God, the power of faith and the power of prayer to do all things through the God who strengthens us, it becomes harder to stay away from that prayer time, and harder yet to shut the door upon your special time with Him. How can one keep secret that which has righted one's life?

Perhaps you think you have tried every diet in the world, and yet nothing has given you victory over appetite." I commend you to Jesus, who says that He will give us the power to do ALL things through Him. This little book nook is dedicated to you learning about Him.

"The Glad Tidings" on MP3

Written in 1900 by a young doctor-turned-minister and editor named E. J. Waggoner, you may now listen to this amazing commentary on the book of Galatians being read by Elder Robert J. Wieland.

As a young man in Theological Seminary, Wieland was told by a professor that there was no one at that time who understood the Old and New Covenant properly. So young Wieland asked "Is there anyone in the past who has?" The professor replied that yes, a certain Ellet J. Waggoner had, and while the book was then out of publication, this professor had a private copy which he would leave in the school library for Wieland to peruse. In reading the first few chapters, the words of John Wesley declaring that his heart was "strangely warmedas he put his full trust in Christ" came to full significance for Wieland.

Wieland later saw to having the book reissued by a new publisher. Some 50 years later after his first reading, Wieland shared this beloved book with me. I too felt that "strange warmth" in my heart upon seeing Paul's message to the Galatians.Waggoner's explaination was the first clear explanation I had seen, without any conflict or necessity of "ignoring" parts of the Bible to make it fit. This book was full of light, and full of God's love and grace and power for the struggling sinner. And isn't that what the battle of food choices is?

Upon understanding how this book had changed Wieland's life and buoyed his faith, I eagerly asked him to let me record him reading this book aloud. And he just as eagerly complied.

This book is life changing. I hope you allow it to change YOUR'S.
